Mission: To inspire lifelong learning through the study of the liberal arts and sciences, the general education program provides the opportunity for students to hone their skills of intellectual inquiry, to gain knowledge of the world and its cultures, and to apply that knowledge to their personal and social lives. The General Education Core Curriculum addresses the student learning outcome for the program.
Social and Behavioral Science
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe and explain human behavior and social systems.
- Understand the importance and impact of informed, engaged citizenship.
All degree candidates nine hours from at least two different disciplines; must include one constitution course.
All graduates must satisfy the Missouri and Federal Constitution requirements by successfully completing one of the following courses: HS 104 or HS 105 or PS 100.
Written Communication
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate effective written communication skills.
- Utilize research and information literacy.
All degree candidates six hours required: EN 130, EN 160 or HN 190
Oral Communications
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrte effective oral communication skills.
All degree candidates three hours required
Natural Sciences
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify and apply basic concepts of science, including empirical methods and scientific inquiry.
BS - 7 hours from at least two disciplines, including one lab; BA/BFA - 3 hours; BSN - BI 104
Mathematical Science
Learning Outcomes:
- Employ quantitative concepts and mathematical methods to analyze and solve problems.
All degree candidates three hours required.
Humanities & Fine Arts
Learning Outcomes:
- Group 1: Articulate the significance of artistic expression and the creative process within society.
- Group 2: Identify, explain, and evaluate ethical perspectives of others and themselves.
- Group 3: Understand the diversity and complexity of the cultural and social world.
BS/BSN - nine hours from at least three disciplines and three groups (three hours each group); BA/BFA - twelve hours from at least three disciplines and three groups. Only three performance hours count toward fulfilling core^.
